Sony released its report on the results of the third quarter of fiscal 2021and one of the most significant data among him is that plans to launch 10 games as a service in the next 4 years, until 2026.
It’s hard not to think about Sony’s takeover of Bungie (developer of Destiny), which happened just yesterday, as part of this large-scale plan.
A look at Sony’s gaming and network services segment from a calendar year perspective.
In CY2021, this segment generated $24.87 billion in revenue, up 8.9% year-on-year.
Operating income was $2.63 billion, down 21.3% year-on-year, which is expected given this is the first full year for the PS5. pic.twitter.com/VvM4yhpV1y

On top of that, there are some more interesting numbers in the report. Sony’s video game segment generated in 2021 – calendar year, not fiscal year – $24,870 million, which is expected to be an increase of 8.9% over the previous year. Hardware receives 24% of these benefits and software the remaining percentage. As has happened in other years, digital games occupy a greater place within this percentage (67%) in the face each time of the most anecdotal profit from physical sales.
PlayStation Plus has approximately 48 million subscribers and 111 million monthly active users. The PlayStation 5, on the other hand, sold 17.3 million units; in the same period since its launch, the PlayStation 4 has sold 20.2 million. A number that has been affected, among other things, by the large number of consoles. Sony’s goal for the next fiscal year is to sell – and produce – 22.6 million consoles.
