Sony announced that from today, 26 September 2018, Fortnite on Playstation 4 will compete with open beta crossover games with the rest of the market’s platforms; Android, iOS, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, Microsoft Windows and Mac operating systems.

Following an extensive evaluation process, SIE (Sony Interactive Entertainment) has identified a way to support multiplayer features for selected third-party content. We recognize that PS4 players have been eagerly awaiting an update, and we appreciate the community’s continued patience as we navigate through this theme to find a solution.
The first step will be an open beta starting today for Fortnite, which will allow cross-platform gaming, progression and commerce across PlayStation 4, Android, iOS, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, Microsoft Windows and Mac operating systems . We see the beta as an opportunity to perform exhaustive testing that guarantees that multiplayer gaming is the best on PlayStation, taking into account the user experience as well as from a technical as well as social perspective.
For 24 years, we have worked hard to offer the best gaming experience to our fans, providing a unique PlayStation perspective. Today, communities around some games have evolved to the point that multiplayer experiences add significant value to players. In recognition of this, we have performed an exhaustive analysis of the business mechanics needed to ensure that the PlayStation experience for our users remains intact today and in the future, to the extent that we seek to open the platform.
This represents an important political change for the SIE, and we are now in the process of planning for the whole organization to support this change.
